Shadow Drawings: Atlantic Center for the Arts

The early stages of Shadow Drawings began at a residency in 2022 at Atlantic Center for the Arts. Every day at 5:30 pm I would trace the shadows images projection onto a horizontal page laid across the boardwalk. With the lighting shifting gradually, and the sudden movement gestures of a breeze or wind, the traced shadows became abstractions of an attempt to outline exact images.

Evolution into a composition process

It reminded me of the experience of memory and how our brains have recollections of places and environments but the internal image is never fully exact or clear. I also saw great potential in the penciled gestures a way to codify early compositional form in pre-composed music, as well as act as a device for interaction and interpretation in improvised settings.

Shadow Drawings

My current multi-year project, Shadow Drawings, merges synesthetic experiences of sight and sound. The compositional process begins with graphic score sketches composed of abstract, automated drawings that are later reinterpreted into staff notation, drawing inspiration from surrealist approaches to improvisational drawing. These graphic sketches are informed by memories of natural landscapes, traced from my home province of Alberta to current residence of Honolulu and various travels from Asia to the High Arctic.
